Gestational Diabetes DietPregnancy is a time when all women want the best for themselves and their baby. Unfortunately, many women do not have the privilege to enjoy pregnancy abundantly.

Problems do crop up and some can be serious enough to cost the life of your foetus. Gestational diabetes is a condition that crops up during pregnancy when women have high blood sugar levels than what is normal during pregnancy.

Once the pregnant woman delivers, the hormone levels return to normalcy and gestational diabetes disappears. When a woman is faced with gestational diabetes, extreme caution has to be administered to protect the life of the baby and the health of the woman. Following a well structured diet plan is a necessity in such cases.

Planned Breakfast

It is during morning that the blood sugar levels drop to its lowest and hence breakfast plays a great role in replenishing the lost energy. A pregnant woman with gestational diabetes must have a healthy breakfast of complex carbohydrates, protein and fats. This can include eggs, whole wheat toast, peanut butter and maybe a slice of melon.

Frequent Small Meals

Breaking your meals into smaller and more frequent sessions will keep your cravings low and sugar levels maintained. Your doctor will suggest a well planned meal and snack plan that you can follow diligently to keep your sugar levels normal. The plan will have three core meals with two snack sessions in between and a snack after dinner as well.

Sugar Limits

High sugar foods and refined sugars must be avoided as much as possible to protect your baby from harm. Stay away from teas that are flavoured, synthetic fruit juices with artificial sweeteners, desserts, soda etc. which can raise blood sugar drastically and lead to symptoms like nausea, reduced vision, excessive thirst and fatigue etc.

High Fibre Intake

The importance of taking high fibre foods becomes more for patients suffering from gestational diabetes. High fibre intake will lead to slow digestion and this will help in keeping the blood sugar levels well maintained, protecting your baby and you in the process. Foods that can be included in the high fibre category are fruits and vegetables, beans, pasta, legumes etc.
