Top 11 Home Remedies For Acid RefluxAcid reflux or heartburn results in reflux of the stomach acid into the food pipe (esophagus). Acid reflux is characterized by burning sensation in the chest. The burning sensation is also felt in the stomach and the throat. The sensation is due to the movement of the hydrochloric acid in the food pipe.

Acid reflux is quite a common problem and lasts for about a couple of days unless treated. In extreme cases, acid efflux leads to pain in the chest, suffocation and halitosis (bad breath).

Acid reflux is easily treatable with the help of antacids. However, there are some effective ways of treating acid reflux naturally. These natural remedies provide immediate relief from heart burn.

Home Remedies For Acid Reflux

Treatment Using Papaya

A cup of papaya slices must be had first thing in the morning on empty stomach. Papaya helps control the regurgitation and reduces your chances of having acid reflux. One can also chew papaya tablets (available in health food stores) to lessen the severity of the condition.

 Treatment Using Aloe Vera Juice

Drink a glass of fresh and undiluted aloe vera juice in the morning before you take your breakfast. Aloe vera juice soothes and repairs the intestinal tract thus reducing the possibility of acid reflux. Use the following recipe to prepare the aloe vera juice – collect the transparent gel of one aloe vera leaf.

Grind the gel in an electric mixer along with half a cup of water. Drink this juice first thing in the morning. Add a teaspoon of honey to the juice for improving its taste. The juice is very efficient in treating and preventing acid reflux.

Treatment Using Chamomile Tea

A cup of freshly brewed chamomile tea 15 minutes after each meal will help ease the symptoms of acid reflux and also bring down the chances of its occurrence. The beneficial effects of chamomile act on the acid present in the stomach and help it settle down instead of regurgitating.

Treatment Using Ginger

Prepare ginger water by boiling 200 gms of ginger in one liter of water. Strain the water and cool it down. Add a teaspoon of honey to one glass of ginger water and drink it 20 minutes before every meal. Drinking milk-free and sugar-free ginger tea will also help ease acid reflux. Ginger soothes the intestinal walls and discourages the hydrochloric acid from entering the food pipe.

Treatment Using Apple Cider Vinegar

Take two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and mix them with a glass of water. Drink this solution of apple cider vinegar every time you feel burning sensation in your chest and stomach.

Drink at least 4 glasses of the concoction if you want to avoid heartburn altogether. Add some honey or fennel essence to make the drink taste better.

Treatment Using Potato

Drink a glass of potato juice first thing in the morning on empty stomach. To prepare the juice you will require one medium sized potato. Peel the skin of the potato and wash the potato in running water to ensure it is completely dirt free. Cut small pieces of the potato and transfer them to an electric mixer. Add a little water and grind. Pour the juice in a glass and add one ounce of fresh apple juice to potato juice and drink.

Treatment Using Fennel

Fennel seeds are a popular way of preventing acid reflux and digesting the food well. Chew a handful of fennel seeds throughout the day (especially after a heavy meal). If one suffers from acid reflux frequently then drink 5 glasses of fennel seed concoction through the day.

Prepare the concoction by adding 200 grams of fennel seeds to a liter of boiling water. Boil the seeds in the water for 10-12 minutes. Strain the liquid and pour it in a bottle. Let it cool down. Drink half a glass of the concoction 20 minutes before and after having your meals. Fennel will nullify the acid in the stomach.

Treatment Using Baking Soda

Combine ½ teaspoon baking soda with ½ cup water. Prepare this drink before every meal. Sip on the baking soda solution while having your meals. Mix some mint leaves or coriander leaves to better the taste. Baking soda neutralizes the acids of the stomach which helps in prevention of acid reflux.

Baking soda and water also soothe the burning and irritation caused in the food pipe. However, it is not a recommended treatment for acid reflux in pregnant woman. Baking soda is known to increase the level of salt in the body which can lead to preeclampsia and high blood pressure in pregnant women.

Treatment Using Water

Drink at least 12 glasses of water through the day if you suffer from frequently occurring heartburns. Water neutralizes the acid in the stomach. So even if reflux happens it will not lead to burning sensation in the chest and the food pipe.

Treatment using Aniseed

Aniseed is often used in preparation of meals for adding flavor and aroma to the dishes. However, chewing on raw aniseed is known to decrease the occurrence of acid reflux as well. Aniseed helps neutralize the acidic environment created by various spices in the stomach.

You can even drink a glass of aniseed concoction especially after a heavy meal to prevent acid reflux. Take a handful of aniseed and put them in 120ml of boiling water. Boil for 7-10 minutes. Allow the infusion to cool and then strain it. Sip on 2 ounces of aniseed water while having your meals. You may also add a teaspoon of aniseeds when you boil water to prepare tea.

Drinking the milk chilled will soothe the irritated food pipe and stomach. However, cold milk should be used as a treatment of acid reflux and not as a way to prevent it.
