A comfortable and undisturbed sleep is what everybody wants. But all of us are not that fortunate. Some people suffer from a serious sleep disorder called sleep apnea where the continuous cycle of sleep is interrupted during sleep.

If left untreated, sleep apnea can turn to be a major disorder as the person suffering from it actually stops breathing in short intervals. As a result the brain along with the whole body stops getting oxygen supply, even though for short intervals.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

There are several treatments available for sleep apnea and they can range from simple change in lifestyle to surgery in extreme cases. If the condition is not that serious or in the early stages then you can easily tackle the situation by doing the following.

Some Sleep Apnea Treatment

Weight Loss and Diet

Often obesity is associated with sleep apnea. Studies have shown that overweight condition can actually raise the chances of frequent stoppage of breathing. So, losing weight can be one remedy for tackling sleep apnea. It not only reduces the number of times the breathing stops but also ensures steady airflow to the lungs.

Eat a balanced diet that is good for health. Put in lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet. But try to avoid foods that produce mucus like banana and dairy product as mucus can block the air passage.

Foods containing essential fatty acids, especially Omega-3 fatty acids, should be increased in diet while foods containing Omega 6 fatty acids should be avoided. Also avoid stimulants like caffeine.

Avoiding Alcohol, Medicines and Smoking

Alcohol and the antihistamines make people sleepy. These also affect the throat muscles and it gets difficult for these muscles to stay taut. This may result in apnea. So, excess use of any of these should be avoided. Similarly, smoking and the smoke particles can also trigger irritation which may lead to blockage of the air passage.

Avoiding Alcohol

Sleeping Position

Change in sleeping position helps people suffering from sleep apnea. If you are sleeping lying on your back, then the tongue and soft palate has the chance of resting on the back of the throat. This can block the airway and cause sleep apnea.

Sleeping Position

For relief, lie on your side or on your abdomen. For a good night’s sleep you can also use nasal spray and anti-allergy medicines. They help in keeping the air passage open. At the same time, if you are suffering from cold and sinus problems then go for medications and treatment of these. These can indirectly help you to get over sleep apnea.

Exercise

Keep the body working and that can be best done by following regular exercise routines. Actions like jogging, walking, swimming, or other physical activities increase the blood flow in the muscles and keep them active.

Exercise

Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is often tried out by people suffering from sleep apnea. But the details regarding success of the methods are yet to be established. Acupuncture has been found to be effective in some cases. However, till the effectiveness of these alternative treatments are established scientifically, it is better not to make these the sole method of treatment.
