Symptoms Of Ovarian CystOvarian cysts are very common occurrences in women of all ages. Cysts in the ovaries are of different types and most of them are benign and hence not a cause of worry. Some cysts cause blockage of the follicles when the eggs fail to get released during ovulation.

It is important to take ovarian cysts seriously as some of them can pose the risk of developing into cancer. If you suspect the presence of ovarian cysts, it is important to be able to assess the symptoms before you schedule a hospital visit.

Symptoms Of Ovarian Cysts

Many of the symptoms of ovarian cysts can also be due to other conditions and diseases which are serious or otherwise. Therefore, do not try to asses symptoms on your own and self medicate.

Lower Back And Pelvic Pain

Pain can surface in varying ways when you have ovarian cysts. It can be concentrated on the lower back and pelvic region. The pain will be such that it is always there as a dull and achy feeling. The pain will be particularly bothering during menstruation, while passing stools and also during intercourse. It will also be present during urination in some cases.

Abdominal Bloating

Cysts can take up precious abdominal space as it grows. This is why most women feel a sense of fullness or a constant feeling of gas inside their stomach. This will not be connected with your diet and flatulence. Abdominal distension will soon set in when the ovarian cysts start growing larger.

Ovulation Irregularities

The presence of the cysts in the ovaries will cause great irregularities in the ovulation cycle. The follicles will be blocked, preventing the release of eggs and women will be met with irregular menstrual cycles or sometimes complete absence of a period due to the non release of eggs.

Due to the presence of cysts, the menstruation will be very heavy with very heavy bleeding which can last for more than a week. This will lead to anaemic conditions and resultant discomforts like low blood pressure and dizziness. Some women will also be met with spotting or bleeding in between periods.

Bladder Problems

Women who have ovarian cysts will have difficulty in urinating or frequent urination as a general symptom. This is because, ovarian cysts can grow big and press against the bladder, causing the bladder to constrict and hence the frequent need for urination. Sometimes the blockage is such that passing urine becomes a difficult proposition.

One of the major repercussions of ovarian cysts is inability to conceive. Infertility can be caused as the mature eggs fail to get released and more and more cysts are formed in the ovaries, damaging the ovaries. This is particularly true in the case of ovarian cysts that are formed due to endometriosis or polycystic ovarian syndrome.

The cysts can also develop into ovarian cancer at a later stage as it damages the walls of the ovary, triggering rapid cell multiplication and resultant cancerous formations.
