Pleurisy TreatmentPleurisy is a disease related loosely to the lungs. It can result from a various factors including viral or bacterial infection. The lungs are covered by a two layered membrane called pleura with a fluid between the membranes.

It is responsible for adequate use of the air you inhale. A person is said to have pleurisy when he or she suffers from the inflammation of this pleura. Breathing becomes painful and the patient feels chest pain. Fever can often accompany the condition. People need to see doctor if the situation seems to turn to worse.

In such situation the patient experiences high temperature and breathing problems; the phlegm shows coloration and sometimes he or she may even show signs of swelling on the limbs.

However, in the early stages when the signs just start to show, there are quite a few natural remedies that can be tried out to contain the situation.

Pleurisy Treatment With Herbal Remedies

Pleurisy Root

This is probably the commonest herb that has been used over the centuries to treat pleurisy. The herb is available in powdered form. 20 to 60 grains of the this powder or 1 to 2ml of the tincture form can be taken daily depending on the age, health condition and medical history of the patient to avoid side effects. It can also be taken as an infusion prepared by soaking 1 to 1½ teaspoon in a cup of hot water for 15 minutes.  Taking this 3 times a day may prove helpful.

However, doctors issue strong warnings because the chemical contained in the herb is very potent and should be avoided by the pregnant and breast feeding women as well as those suffering from heart problems and undergoing treatment with digoxin.

Wild Cherry Bark

This is another very popular herbal remedy used for treatment of cough and lung related problems. It contains prunasin, a compound which is the cause of antispasmodic and sedative properties the bark.

The word of warning is that it should not be overused and not taken continuously over many weeks as it can prove toxic. To prepare the concoction soak about 100 gm of freshly dried and ground wild cherry bark in about ½ a cup of water overnight.

Strain the solution and add honey for making it sweet. Now take 2 – 3 teaspoons of this mixture twice or thrice daily. If you soak it for about 15 minutes, then you can drink the liquid straight away. If you are using a tincture, then you can use a teaspoon of it in water and sip it all along the day.

Golden Seal

This is a Native American herb that is also known by the name yellow root. It has properties to cool infections of the mucous membranes. It also has antibacterial properties. A cup of the decoction of the herb can be taken 3 times a day for relief.

Celery

Celery is said to have antispasmodic properties. So it is often used in treatment of pleurisy. Celery seeds may also be used for the purpose.

Yerba Santa

This is another Native American herb that acts as an expectorant and can help in expelling phlegm.

Hyssop

This herb has the ability to give relief in problems of the lung and upper respiratory tract. A decoction of the herb is generally used.

Mullen

Triterpene saponins contained in the herb help in loosening and expelling mucus from the lungs; the mucilage soothes the membranes while iridoid glycosides fight inflammation. Hence it is often used for treatment of pleurisy.
