Irritable bowel syndrome, abbreviated as IBS, is a digestive system disorder which occurs when the muscles of the large intestine are not able to perform their operations properly. Peppermint oil is considered to be the most effective herb for IBS. It helps in providing relief from cramps and gas. A combination of peppermint oil and caraway oil in the form of capsule is an effective herbal remedy for IBS.
Slippery elm is believed to provide relief for both diarrhea and constipation related IBS. The problem of diarrhea is eased with the help of addition of bulk to stool due to intake of this herb. Also, the herb helps in easing constipation by softening the stools.
This is an Asian herbal fruit which acts as a natural laxative to treat constipation.
The problem of diarrhea related IBS can be treated to a great extent with the help of chamomile. This herb can be taken in the form of capsule, tea, or liquid supplement to treat diarrhea.
Aloe vera is regarded to be an effective herbal treatment for diarrhea.
The tea made of blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry leaves is believed to provide relief from diarrhea predominant irritable bowel syndrome. The leaves should be allowed to steep in water for around five to ten minutes to attain maximum benefit.
Anise is considered to be a beneficial herb for people suffering from constipation predominant IBS. It acts as a laxative and helps in softening the stools, hence promoting regular and soft bowel movements.
The herb should be consumed in the form of tea to obtain effective results. The anise seeds should be boiled in water and allowed to steep for a few minutes, before consuming it several times during the day.
