Though not a life threatening condition, prolonged episodes of acid reflux can cause damage to the walls of the esophagus.

Most people who suffer from acid reflux take antacids or medications that reduce the acid in the stomach for temporary relief. The truth however is that most mild to moderate cases of acid reflux can be entirely controlled through a few diet and lifestyle changes.

Controlling the diet will help you eliminate the triggers that cause acid reflux and also prevent damage to the esophagus, preventing complications later on.

Small, Healthy Meals

The importance of breaking your diet into smaller meals becomes manifold when you have acid reflux. This will prevent you from over stuffing your stomach and causing the food to be thrown back up. Breaking your meals into smaller sessions will also help increase the metabolic rate and reduce the tension on the muscles that cause spasms and resultant reflux action.

Stay Away From Acidic Foods

Anything that is acidic can obviously increase your chances of getting acid reflux. Therefore, avoid acidic food like juices of fruits like oranges, tomatoes, lemons, pineapples grapefruits etc.

Caffeine is known to be a great trigger of acid reflux and hence best avoided from your diet. While this might be a great put off for those who are addicted to colas and coffees, research does suggest that reduction in caffeine can dramatically improve the condition of acid reflux patients. Stick to fresh and non acidic fruit juices instead.

Garlic, pepper and chilli may be very beneficial for your health. But for people who suffer from acid reflux, they can be very damaging to the esophagus and cause very bad burning sensation due to the damage in the lining. Stay away from such foods if you have severe acid reflux.

Early Dinner

It is important to have your dinner early when you have acid reflux. It must be scheduled at least a couple of hours before sleep so that the food gets digested easily. Keep your head elevated as well while you sleep so that the food does not come up while you sleep. It also helps if you sleep on your left side than your right as the stomach is on a lower level than your esophagus and hence food will not be thrown up at night.
