Avoid Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulating drink and when taken before sleep can lead to nerve stimulation and loss of sleep. Intake of caffeinated products like tea, coffee, chocolates etc. before sleep can be detrimental to your sleep and must be avoided at least 3 to 4 hours before sleep.

Milt and Nutmeg

Taking a glass of milk just before sleep has been a long accepted practice since ages. The logic behind this seems to be that milk is a natural sedative and helps in attaining sleep. To get a much stronger natural sedative, boil milk and add some sugar as well for taste. Sprinkle some nutmeg powder and stir well before drinking. The combined action of two natural sedatives, milk and nutmeg help in attaining sound sleep.


Curd Remedy

Thick curd can be massaged on to your scalp for 15-20 minutes and washed off before sleeping. This is known to induce sleep. Drinking a cup or two of curd too seems to have the same effect.


Another natural sleep inducer, honey can be mixed with a glass of warm water before you head to sleep. This too will give you good sleep.

Epson Salt

Epsom salt too has sleep inducing properties and can be used for getting good sleep. Epson salt can be used in your bath before sleep. Take two cups of Epsom salt to a hot bath an hour before sleep and soak your body for about 20 minutes before sleep.

Banana and Cumin Seeds

Roast a teaspoon of cumin seeds and add a mashed banana to it. This has to be taken after dinner an hour before you sleep. This is known to induce sleep.


Lavender is a herb that is known to help with sleep problems. Lavender can be crushed and spread on the pillow on which you sleep. The delightful fragrance can help in getting good sleep all throughout the night. Lavender can be rubbed on your chest as well as neck before you sleep.

Lettuce Leaves

Extract lettuce juice from the leaves and drink it before sleep. Lettuce leaves contain a substance known as lactucarium that helps in inducing sleep.

Meditation and Yoga

Sometimes stress and anxiety can cause sleeplessness. In such cases calming your mind and body before sleep is an essential part of your daily regime. Meditation and yoga can help in attaining both mental a well as physical calm. Doing light yoga and meditation exercises before sleep will help you sleep peacefully.


Research shows that sugary foods when taken before sleep can help in attaining uninterrupted sleep. However, make sure that you do not overdo it. Take a few cookies before sleep.
