Friction between the bones while bending, walking or standing causes extreme pain. This injury can create obstacle in their career as it can restrict the movement. An early treatment may help to return to the track. This condition affects older people also.

This condition of arthritis occurs when the cartilage (covering of tissues) which prevents friction among bones gets eroded and leads to inflammation of the joints. The intake of foods in greater quantity that are rich in purines contributes to the build of uric acid in the joints. Uric acid is filtered out of our body through kidney when we are healthy. But in people suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, physical injury  or overweight, the body is unable to filter purines and as a result sharp crystal are formed around the joint that causes pain and inflammation.

Though men are more affected by big toe joint pain but after menopause women are also susceptible to this joint pain. The toe joint becomes extremely painful, red and swollen. Even the pressure of socks, shoe or bed sheet becomes unbearable.  Recurrent attacks can cause continuous joint pain and deformity of the affected joint is also possible.

When a lump near the side of the toe in bony structure is formed, it is called bunions. It results from the inflammation of fluid filled sac. The skin around the bumpy toe joint becomes red and patient feels difficulty in moving the toe.

Some medicines are available to reduce the quantity of purines in the body. Application of cold and hot compress can also help to reduce the pain. Over the counter pain relief medicines like ibuprofen or aspirin can also help to get relief from pain.

Putting the toe joint in moderately hot water can help to reduce the discomfort and pain. When the pain does not respond to these medicines corticosteroids injections are given to reduce the pain.
