For runners and sports persons Hallux rigidus can be the possible cause of the toe joint pain. This disorder is a kind of osteoarthritis that’s caused due to wearing away of the joints located in the ball of the big toe.  At the base of the toe there are two joints and the larger joint gets affected by arthritis.

Friction between the bones while bending, walking or standing causes extreme pain. This injury can create obstacle in their career as it can restrict the movement. An early treatment may help to return to the track. This condition affects older people also.

This condition of arthritis occurs when the cartilage (covering of tissues) which prevents friction among bones gets eroded and leads to inflammation of the joints. It brings stiffness on the big toe.  It becomes difficult for the patient to move the toe and swelling on the top of the toe joint becomes visible in the form of a bony bump.

Though men are more affected by big toe joint pain but after menopause women are also susceptible to this joint pain. The toe joint becomes extremely painful, red and swollen.
