causes of yeast infectionsYeast infection is very widespread and is caused when the skin or the body is exposed to moisture that cannot be dissipated. The most common places affected by yeast are vagina and the oral cavity. Men, women and even children are susceptible to yeast infections. Yeast infection is caused by candida albicans which is a fungus that is present in everyone’s body. When conditions are favourable, the fungus multiplies, causing yeast infection.

Though not a life threatening condition, it is important to treat yeast infections as there are chances of it spreading to other areas of the body as well. Moist areas like the mouth and the vagina are always susceptible to infections and hence care must be taken to check for a thick curdy discharge for the vagina or a white coat on the tongue to identify yeast infection.

Causes Of Yeast Infection

Frequent Intake Of Antibiotics

One of the major causes of yeast infections is the abuse of antibiotics which not only kill the good and the bad bacteria, but also disrupt the balance of yeast in the body. The levels of yeast are increased tremendously with the intake of antibiotics, leading to vagina yeast infection. The vaginal walls will get inflamed along with itching and irritation.

Vaginal Douching

Many women are used to vaginal douching which is the rinsing of the vaginal canal using the fluid from a pressurised container. It can transfer pathogens into the cervix due to the pressure of the fluid and not an entirely favourable practice among women.  Frequent vaginal douching will destroy the normal flora in the vaginal canal, leading to yeast infections.

Bubble Baths

Bubble bath too can sometimes lead to vaginal yeast infections. This is because women mostly use aromatic and perfumed products with chemicals for bubble baths. They also spend a lot of time in the tub which will result in the chemicals and perfumed products entering the vaginal canal and causing yeast infections. Bubble baths are also bad in that harmful bacteria can enter the vaginal canal while you are immersed in the water.

Diseases like diabetes make a woman especially susceptible to vaginal yeast infections. While the acidic environment in the vagina will keep the yeast from multiplying uncontrollably, with diabetes, the amount of glucose and sugar in the vaginal secretions are increased, leading to vaginal yeast infections. Sugar nourishes yeast, leading to uncontrollable multiplication.

Pregnancy is also the time when you are more susceptible to yeast infection. This is due to the fact that higher levels of estrogen in a pregnant woman’s body will lead to more glycogen production, helping the yeast to thrive in the vagina easily.  Estrogen will also directly influence the yeast growth allowing the yeast to multiply faster and stick well on to the walls of the vaginal canal.

Birth Control Pills

The use of birth control pills too is linked to vaginal yeast infection. Pills contain estrogen and progestin which again helps in the thriving of yeast in the vagina. The overgrowth of candida albicans will cause irritation and itching of the vagina.
