An insect can bite us any time of the day or night. Most often we do not do anything about an insect bite. It itches, swells and stings and just goes away after a few hours. However, there are some insect bites that can cause a lot of pain and distress and which requires immediate action to facilitate relief.
One need not visit a doctor or take OTC drugs to relieve such bites. There are quite a few home remedies that can be used for treating insect bites. However, if there is no relief from the symptoms after administering home remedies, you must always seek medical help as there are insect bites that could be poisonous too.
Soap And Water
Some insects like mosquitoes and flies can leave bacteria on the top of our skin when they sting us. This could lead to infections if our skin is cut or peeled. Therefore, you must ensure that the skin is thoroughly washed with fresh water and some soap, preferably antibacterial to remove the germs from the skin. Try and avoid scratching the skin when an insect bites. If unbearable, rub with your palm which will prevent skin peeling and resultant infections.
A very simple and effective remedy for preventing the itching sensation and also for helping you prevent scratching and peeling the skin, calamine lotion can be applied after you wash the area with soap and water. Allow the lotion to dry on your skin and leave it there to prevent itching and swelling of skin.
Milk can calm an irritated nerve which is what causes the itching and stinging when an insect bites. Apply a milk based cream or milk directly on the insect bite. Allow the milk to dry and wash off after the itching is gone. The special enzymes in milk will relive the itching and irritation by calming the nerves.
When the itching becomes unbearable or before the skin gets a chance to itch and swell due to the histamine action, apply an ice compress or place an ice on the area of the skin where the insect bite is.

To prevent swelling and destroy any bacteria that could be present on the surface of the skin apply a cotton cloth soaked in a mixture of water and baking soda. Leave it on the skin for 15-20 minutes before you remove it. This will remove swelling of skin and itching.
This treatment can be adopted if you have several areas on the skin that is bitten by an insect. Down a cup of oatmeal into a tub of warm water. Soak your body to relieve the itching and stinging sensation. After 15 minutes of soaking, you will have removed the need to scratch as the swelling and the itching would have subsides completely with this treatment.
Another simple remedy is to apply peppermint toothpaste on the affected area to relieve the itch and the pain. Peppermint will cool the skin considerably.
