The varicella zoster virus that causes chickenpox is the cause for shingles as well. This chickenpox virus can remain inactive inside a human being’s body for several years and surface as shingles during adulthood. Shingles can be very painful even though they clear away on its own in a few weeks.
Symptoms too are very distressing with fever and chills, pain, itching, blisters filled with pus and rashes that can spread to many places in the body. There are many medicines that are used to suppress the virus. But these are again dormant and hence have chances of surfacing again. Natural treatments are much more effective in treating shingles.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Being an antimicrobial in action, apple cider vinegar can clear off the action of the virus and help remove the rashes with continuous application. The astringent qualities of apple cider vinegar can be used for masking the pain as well.
Take a cotton ball soaked in apple cider vinegar and gently apply on the affected skin. Do it twice a day and drink 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed with a glass of water or fresh juice for an internal action as well.
Organic honey helps in healing and moisturising the skin affected by shingles. Apply honey generously on the affected skin and leave it on. Reapply every few hours. You can seal the area with gauze if you are out. Frequent application of organic honey will finally heal the skin and provide relief to the patient.
Pure Coconut Oil
Pure unrefined coconut oil has antimicrobial and antifungal qualities. It will also arrest the spread of infection due to its fatty layer. Dip a soft cloth in virgin coconut oil and place it on the affected skin. Seal with a tape or gauze. Replace with fresh coconut oil every few hours. Continue application until the shingles fades away.
Aloe Vera And Cayenne Pepper
Both these naturally occurring products have antimicrobial properties and can heal and rejuvenate the skin affected by shingles. Mix equal proportions of cayenne pepper and aloe gel and smear it on the skin affected by shingles.
The pain and the itching will be greatly masked by the hot cayenne pepper and cool aloe gel. This will also stop the virus from spreading and speed up the process of healing.
Green tea is antiviral and hence a great treatment method for shingles. Drink green tea 4-5 times a day to relieve your body from stress and calm down the nerves. Stress is a major factor that can activate the shingles virus and trigger an attack.
Nail polish removers too can be used for treating shingles. How? Just apply acetone on the blister filled skin and prevent the pain and itching sensation associated with shingles. Acetone has a cooling action and will immediately cool the area. It acts as an exfoliant as well, removing the damaged dead skin cells that are accumulated on the skin. It also helps in removing the viral action on the skin.
